JULIE BROWN

The first wood puzzle I ever designed was a wood puzzle of a bunny. I was really interested in what cool shapes I could make with the pieces, and I was more concerned about the constructability of the model than what it would weigh or if it would be able to hold itself up. This is the only puzzle that I did end up cutting out, and it was very bottom-heavy.
My second wood puzzle was a very involved puzzle that I made for my brother's birthday. I modeled the design off of a Rathalos dragon from the Monster Hunter franchise. The picture on the right shows the laser cut template for cutting the puzzle pieces out of 1/8" plywood to assemble the 3D model.

My third puzzle was at first meant to be a free-standing winged Triforce symbol, that ended up turning into a wall-hanging. I was inspired by the Triforce symbol from the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in which the Triforce symbol is modeled to look like a bird, with wings and bird feet. This was the first model that I experimented with pieces that would be hidden from view, whose only purpose is to hold up other pieces.

My final two puzzles (Sgt. Hammer's tank from StarCraft on the left, and a Catapult Mech from MechWarrior on the right) were my pet projects for multiple summers, and even some time during the school semesters while I was in college. I let my imagination go free, not even concerning myself too much about the scale of the models, or how constructable they are. I also began to put engravings on the models, shown in green. Neither of these models, nor the Triforce model, have been cut yet; they are still just designs on the computer.
